ANDIE’S POST

Hi friends, and welcome to Holy Week!  This season is such a beautiful invitation into the complexities of our faith and onto the road that Jesus walked to bring us along with him.  I want to highlight some of the opportunities at ubc that might help facilitate the wonder, grief, and mysticism available to us as we head into Easter.

Maundy Thursday:
Maundy Thursday recalls the last meal Jesus had with his friends.  In knowing that Judas would betray him, Peter would deny him, and the rest of the disciples would scatter, Jesus still washed their feet, shared his table, and offered his love.  We are honoring that expression of community by sharing a meal and taking communion together, 6pm on the 2nd.  You can support this time together by signing up to bring something through the Maundy Thursday post below.

Good Friday:
Good Friday is one of my favorite liturgies of the year.  Strange, maybe, especially when we are watching so much death around the world, but the unjust murder of Jesus is an underpinning of our shared narrative and feeling its weight reminds me of my deep connection to both Jesus and the crowd that crucified him.  Good Friday calls up the reality that the worst day in history came before the best, and it invites us to expand our capacity to hold those two truths together. Join us at 5:30pm on the 3rd; childcare is provided.

Whatever you have space for, I hope you'll attend.  We make this community, we care for this community, and we care for this community together.

THIS WEEK.

Prep Parties//Meals Available

After the Congressional Budget Bill passed in July of 2025, we knew that we had to respond with radical hospitality through practical means.  The bill cut food assistance funding significantly, and will have lasting impacts on SNAP eligibility and work requirements.  With so much food insecurity already in our community, we launched Prep Parties at UBC.  Prep Parties are a chance for small groups of people to gather together, cook freezer meals, and stock the freezer in our kitchen.  The meals are free to anyone in our congregation or broader community who may need them, whatever the reason.  Too much month at the end of the money?  Busy weekend protesting and advocating for policy change?  Hosting a MiCasa and don't have time to cook?  Please grab a meal!

If you are interested in joining our next round of Prep Parties, please email andie@ubcwaco.org.  The plan is to restock on a quarterly basis, and we need shoppers, cooks, and hosts.

ANDIE’S POST

This is Ourselves Under Pressure
Bet you can guess what artist I'm listening to right now!  Every time I hear that song, I am reminded of my favorite lyric: Turned away from it all like a blind man // Sat on a fence, but it don't work // Keep coming up with love, but it's so slashed and torn

Friends, love is indeed slashed and torn.  It is an imperfect vehicle for the essence of a perfect God, and we are doing our very best to jump in and swim in its current as people who are seeking to be formed in the likeness of Christ.  This Sunday is Palm Sunday, and I am sure of two things: Jesus was not who the crowds wanted him to be, and Jesus was exactly who the crowds needed.  He loved the people he encountered so completely, and yet ultimately, Divine Love was slashed and torn.  Sitting on a fence is a very human response to a very complicated world, and yet we are invited to pick a side in the Cosmic drama of the unfolding kin-dom of heaven. May I suggest erring on the side of love?  Of hope?  Of restoration, resurrection, and shouts of Hosanna, imperfect as they may be?  In this way, we join Bowie and Mercury in their ineffable call to give love one more chance.  What incredible company!

NICOLE’S POST

Spring is upon us at UBC and we have so many exciting things going on! I am thankful to be part of a church that prioritizes experiences together. As we focus on Embracing Beauty this Lenten season, I have sought opportunities to care for our planet together. UBC has sponsored TWO teams for the Trash Dash & Bash River Cleanup with Keep Waco Beautiful, we will be embarking on our second camping trip together with GTG Outdoors where we will learn about ways to decrease our environmental impact as we spend time in nature, and we have been awarded a grant through CBF that will allow us to install water bottle fillers (and we can use any leftover funds for other sustainability projects!). I am thrilled to participate in these things alongside a church that does not separate the sacred and the secular and sees God's beauty in all of it.

THIS WEEK.

St. Patrick Liturgy- Tuesday, March 17th, 5:30pm

ANDIE’S POST

Listening to the Hamilton soundtrack while watching the US bomb a foreign country was NOT on my bingo card for 2026. I am stunned and horrified by the footage of the destruction that is coming to us through our phones and TVs, and in this cultural moment, I am acutely aware of my own insignificance. Our capacity for violence is humbling, and frightening, and matched (overtaken?) only by our capacity to love. We have equal and I hope greater capacity to do good. To stand. To serve. To impact our own small worlds with the love of Jesus that changes the trajectory of our universe in small but increasingly important ways. Last week I sat in the Rock n Roll room with several small group leaders, and we talked about how we share the sense that little flickers of community might matter more now than ever. I agree. I cherish my own small group with every fiber of my being, and I'm so grateful for the time we gather and process and hold each other's burdens and joys. Here's my ask: would you consider hosting a small group in the near future? You may have noticed Ubc is growing and new faces abound. We have people looking for deeper connection and we need new groups to place them in. Hosting can be as simple as meeting at the church and managing communication or as complex as choosing and facilitating content. Either one or anything in between would be so beneficial as we seek to care for each other and the broader community of Waco in the wake of what we are witnessing. Stay safe, and stay connected! Love yall.

JAMIE’S POST

If you didn’t know, I teach a section of Dying and Death Education at Baylor on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I offer my students a standing semester-long assignment: as you go about your life, notice what makes you feel particularly alive.

Irvin Yalom has likened death to the sun—that which illuminates and gives shape to the world yet, if you stare directly at it, hurts.

I ask my students to notice what makes them feel alive to offer balance to that pain and insight into that illumination.

On Tuesdays, I ask them to share their insights with their classmates. You’d be surprised what you’ll find when you are actively monitoring for what makes you feel alive.

At Ubc, we talk about Lent as a season of attending the question of what it means to live life to the fullest—who am I/what am I for?

There is an element of this sacred task that is creative—what kind of lives are we building? To what might we aspire? From what might we repent?(in a turning away sense, not the vague shame sense)

But there is another element to this sacred task that is more like remembering. We used to know who we are and what we are for. We’ve always known. We were just better at it when we were babies.

I have a sense that I’ve seen my students getting glimpses into remembering this sort of thing after being open to what makes them feel alive for several months on end.

And so I want to offer you this as a Lenten practice: Notice what makes you feel particularly alive. Keep a list if you’d like. Then, when you’re ready, share it with someone and speculate wildly about what it might mean.

THIS WEEK.

CHURCH NEEDS

CCMS Movie Night Volunteers
We are going to host a movie night at UBC for our CCMS students on Wednesday, March 4 from 6-8 pm along with the Youth Group. Brazos Kids Dental is sponsoring pizza and we will have drinks and popcorn. We will be showing Remember the Titans.

We'd love for UBCers to join and come get to know Brazos Kids Dental, a partner with UBC that will sponsor many community events for us, as well as meet some CCMS students and their families!

Nicole would like help with set up, clean up, and management during the movie time! To sign up to help, email nicole at nicole@ubcwaco.org.

Wanted: Small Group Hosts!
We have a veritable slew of potential Small Group participants waiting in the wings and we are looking for hosts and/or facilitators.  Our small group format is communal, so you can trade off facilitating or pick someone to lead discussions/activities for the week or season.  If you are interested in hosting a new group in your home or in facilitating one at the church, please email Andie at andie@ubcwaco.org. If you are interested in joining, same email, different subject line!

Feed the Youths
Part of our youth group’s Wednesday gatherings is eating dinner, and you can sign up to be the source of said dinner!

KIDS CAMP

Nicole has reserved 4 girl spots and 4 boy spots for Passport Camp July 19-22nd @ Lake Brownwood. Cost per spot is $408. This is for completed 3rd grade- completed 6th graders! We will also take a male and female chaperone and need drivers.

Some scholarship money may be awarded through Passport and fundraising through UBC. Nicole has applied for the money and will be able to disperse what we are awarded and what we raise on an as-needed basis.

More info on camp here:

ANDIE’S POST

Blood is Thicker than (Toilet) Water

"Well, this time we could have 'Oops! We Did it Again! 90's/2000's Plumbing Bingo!"  Or, 'Oh Crap! It Happened Again! Bingo.'"  Actual text messages I sent to the rest of the staff after discovering inches of standing water in the Backside, and rising.  If it isn't one thing, it's another.  Panic momentarily ensued as I flashed back to March 17tth, 2025, standing with a plumber and remediation specialist during our inaugural St. Patrick's Day Liturgy.  Maybe it's because I'm another year older, hopefully another year wiser, but even though the damage was more extensive this time, we've been here before.  We've gone "oh sh*t!" before.  Literally.  We've dealt with the change in routine, with bathrooms being out of service, and we've pooled our resources so that we were no longer pooling toilet water.  I don't know what the conclusion to this saga will be, but here's what I do know: When I got to ubc to assess the damage, Jamie was pulling up at the same time.  A leadership team member was already here.  Jess was planning on coming after her internship was done for the day.  Nicole was checking in on us and asking about updates and giving meaningful input.  If I'm going to wade through the toilet waters of this life, I want to do it with this team and with you. With the whole of ubc.  With the people I look at every Sunday morning with admiration, gratitude, and affection.  Our building needs repair, so we will repair it, just like we work together to repair what is broken in this world.  Pastoring ubc is one of the greatest honors of my life, even when I'm ankle deep in toilet water.

THIS WEEK.

NICOLE’S POST

Community Partnership Updates

Hey there. The ice has melted, the sun is coming out, and the year is rolling. I’d like another kind of ice to melt away too, and I know that is actively on our minds. Holding space for all of us as we navigate how we help, how we speak up, how we cope, how we just be in this world right now.

Connection is something I’m grateful for at UBC. Connection with like-minded people, navigating this together, and refusing to be silent about injustice. I’m grateful for many opportunities to connect with each other through meet-ups, dinners and events, reflect with special liturgies and in our church services, and serve the community alongside each other.

We have some updates on our community partnership front. Firstly, Brazos Kids/Hewitt Kids/Waco Kids Dental has reached out about partnering with UBC and sponsoring community events, in order to integrate into our community, and because they believe in what UBC is doing in Waco and the safe space we create. Our first event with them will be on March 4, where we will put on a movie night for our CCMS friends alongside our regular Youth night. Brazos Kids will sponsor the food, and we will provide popcorn and drinks. If you’d like to donate either popcorn kernels for the popcorn machine or drinks for this night, you can bring them to the kids check-in office anytime before March 4. Looking for things like water bottles, Coke, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, etc. Another way to help out is with your time– I’d love help managing set up, clean up and serving food and things during the movie night! You can email me at nicole@ubcwaco.org if you are interested.

Secondly, we have strengthened our partnership with Pack of Hope Waco, which I am also a board member for. UBC has been able to assist with food donations and now we are the meeting place for their once a month board meeting! We meet the third Monday of each month at UBC in the rock n roll room at 5:30. If you are interested in what POH does, or even becoming part of the board yourself, you have my invitation to come check out a meeting, just shoot me an email and let me know! Another way to be involved with POH? On Tuesdays at 3:30 at Poppa Rollos on Valley Mills (in the back warehouse building), they pack bags for their various partner schools to distribute to kids for the week. HUNDREDS of bags! If you have some time to give, come help! Kids are welcome to help pack as well.

I am excited and honored to be in this role where I am connecting UBC with our community. Thank you all so much for your constant support with these endeavors, and I am looking forward to spring at UBC.

THIS WEEK.

ANDIE’S POST

Venn Diagrams

Thank you to all who joined us online last weekend.  I hope you are staying warm and safe!  A couple of upfront disclosures: I usually write my sermons the weekend I preach them.  My ADHD brain basically requires me to complete them in one sitting or else I will for sure lose my place.  It also allows me to incorporate any new events/tragedies that might happen later in the week.  Second, I got a jump start on last weekend’s sermon, so at the time it was written and recorded, Alex Pretti had not been murdered. I want to address that here.  This conversation is not just a political one, or an immigration one, or a gun reform one.  This conversation is not just about government or fascism or racism.  This conversation is also one of faith.  If I were a betting man, I would put a lot of money on the odds that the Venn diagram of people who believe Alex Pretti’s death was justified, people who are pro-birth, and people who self-identify as Christians is a near-circle.  Americans who have bought into the narrative that they are persecuted because of their faith see a reckoning and are taking up the cause of the oppressor.  We need and deserve a healthy dose of perspective in the American Church.  We have the right to practice our religions.  We have the right to assemble at houses of worship.  We have the right to free speech about our belief systems and more.  How are we taking advantage of our rights for the benefit and betterment of the truly oppressed?  Does our faith move us to speak, to protest, to have the hard conversations we’ve avoided?  What does our Venn diagram look like?  If it were up to me, our circle would be people who are trying our best to follow the teachings of Christ, people who are actively condemning violence in all forms, and people who are willing to risk discomfort for the truth.  Love yall; stay safe, and as always, if you need a listening ear, I’m around.

THIS WEEK.

Wanted: MiCasa Hosts!
We have a veritable slew of potential MiCasa participants waiting in the wings and we are looking for hosts and/or facilitators.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT: UBCYP Hangout

We’re having a UBCYP hangout on Thursday of this week. If you don’t know what that is, it’s our “young professionals” group. Since those words are functionally meaningless when placed next to each other, here is an alternative phrase: a group for people who are over the age of 21, but under the age of old. Hope that helps. Anyway, email andie@ubcwaco.org for the address.

ANDIE’S POST

A Breath for the Faint of Heart

Feel the breath in your lungs. You are here.  You are alive.  You are not alone.  Listen to the sounds around you. Whether buzz, background noise, or the heaviness of silence, you are part of the weaving of life and love and waves that make up this world.  Feel your body in space.  You are always connected: to the ground, to your chair, to the countertop you lean over to keep you upright.

Friends, sometimes there just isn't anything to do beyond recognizing our existence in the fabric of time.  Recognize that God is here in whatever meaningful way you need God to be, and take heart.  If you are breathing, if there is air fueling the blood coursing through your body, you still have time.  On hard weeks, please remember that you cannot save the world.  More importantly, remember it isn't your job to do so.  You have one little piece, I have one little piece, and as we bring them together, we make an impact.  I love you, am grateful for you, and am praying for you.  I am also available to you, so if you need care or a cry or to break things, you've got me in your corner. Peace to you, Andie.

NICOLE’S POST

Embrace Beauty.

We say it every Sunday... "may we love God, embrace beauty and live life to the fullest". I have found that sometimes, routine can become mindless to me. As I set my intentions for myself and my family for 2026, I'm thinking deeply about that benediction.

How can I draw closer to God? Draw closer in love? How can I embrace the beauty that already surrounds me? How can I seek to create beauty in the world? And truly, how can I live life to the fullest?

Over the holidays, my family and I took a trip to Big Bend National Park with GTG Outdoors. 19 people, one campsite, me, Duke, and four kids in a tent. It was absolutely GLORIOUS. I have not considered myself "outdoorsy", but I did go on many camping trips as a kid with my Canadian grandparents around the Northeast of the US and Canada. I don't remember a lot of specifics about my childhood, but I can put myself in that tent, next to my grandma, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, anytime I close my eyes and think about it. The grandeur of beauty that exists in the world is unforgettable.

We were "unplugged". No screens, no phones, just playing with rocks when the kids had any idle time (and loving it), and lots of active time hiking and exploring. I felt the love of God, the love of their Creation, and the desire to make sure the place stayed exactly as it was: absolutely beautiful. I thanked my own body for carrying my four kids, and continuing to show her strength by hiking through the desert and towing a kid or two at all times simultaneously...while watching another kid or two fearlessly push boundaries. I can't say I always did that part with grace, ya'll.

I am grateful that the GarMelo family & GTG exists, because they made what seemed nearly impossible, joyfully possible. For families, even my big and energetic crew, to spend time together in nature, to learn how to love and care for our world, and to have a safe space to explore these things with experts in the field. They make these experiences accessible to as many people as they can. What a blessing. What a way to love God and others well.

So, to answer my own question, how will I live out UBC's benediction this year? I will draw closer to God's creation and create time for my family to connect, I will intentionally put love into the world, and I will seize any moment to live life to the absolute fullest: giving space for my kids to play with rocks, explore the world around them, and finding joy and gratitude in even the mundane.

I would love for you to take a moment to meditate on your intentions this year, too.

Love God. Embrace Beauty. Live life to the fullest.

A CALENDAR TURNING PRAYER

Living God,

As we step beyond this year and begin the next,
We thank you for this life, with all its potentials and possibilities

As we step beyond this year and begin the next,
We do so with with trust,
Knowing we are created for loving encounter

We step into our new year with hope
Knowing this year can hold
Love, kindness,
Forgiveness and justice

As we recall the year we are stepping beyond,
May we learn, may we love,
May we live on

As we step beyond this year and begin the next,
we make room for the unexpected
May we find wisdom and life there.

Help us to embrace possibility
Respond graciously to disappointment
And hold tenderly those we encounter
Help us be fully present to each day

We pray for all whose year will be difficult
May we support, may we listen,
May we change

We resolve to live life in its fullness
May we welcome the people who’ll be part of this year
May we greet God in ordinary and hidden moments
May we live the life we are living
May we find the wisdom we need
May we hear the needs of those we meet
May we love the life that we are given, knowing it is most definitely a gift.

God be with us,
Amen.

This is in large part adapted from a prayer by Pádraig Ó Tuama.

THIS WEEK

Just Sunday morning this week—happy new year!

UBC survives on the generosity of our congregation. Your financial contributions allow us to continue to create a space that is welcoming to all, embraces beauty, and seeks to live life to the fullest.

You can give, as you’re able, on Sunday mornings or set up a single or recurring online gift here.

If you ever have trouble with giving online or have a question about how to give, feel free to email administrator@ubcwaco.org.

CHURCH NEEDS

Pack of Hope Volunteers

Especially during Baylor breaks, there is a big need for packers on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 @ Poppa Rollo’s on Valley Mills. We send more bags home for breaks like Christmas break, too, so we need more hands! You can just show up, no prerequisites needed. Kids are welcome to come help pack bags too! More info at https://packofhope.org/faq or email nicole@ubcwaco.org

NEW BABY ON THE LOOSE
The Altahifs welcomed baby Vivian the day before Thanksgiving! Sign up for the meal train here.

Wanted: MiCasa Hosts!
We have a veritable slew of potential MiCasa participants waiting in the wings and we are looking for hosts and/or facilitators.

Freezer Meal Prep Parties
Love spreadsheets?  Love organizing?  Love feeding people?  Join our Freezer Meal Prep Party Org team!  This team places people together for the Prep Party, provides shopping lists and recipes, and oversees transport to the church.  Email Andie at andie@ubcwaco.org to join!

Feed the Youths
Part of our youth group’s Wednesday gatherings is eating dinner, and you can sign up to be the source of said dinner!

ANDIE’S POST

Happy Christmas Eve Eve! One of my favorite and most true things that I say during our Sunday morning liturgies is this: Whatever you're feeling, whatever you bring to this morning, whatever you are experiencing, it is welcome. You are welcome. You don't have to feel a certain way here. The world might feel heavy and dark to you. You might be celebrating something. Whatever is occupying your mind, it too, is welcome here. If you want to leave it outside for an hour, you can do that, as well. That invitation is particularly meaningful to me when I am usually the person you hear speak the most during the service. I am grateful that when I enter the building, I am also allowed to be a human. We have created a place that, to the best of its ability, is a haven from the consumeristic nature of a lot of Western religion. It is a gift to be who we are and be met there in that state. My darling friends, as you prepare to commemorate the moment when light burst forth to illuminate the darkness, please hear me when I say this: Whatever you are experiencing, whatever you feel, whether heavy or joyful or a mix of both, you are welcome with Christ. You are welcomed by the one who took on flesh and blood so that he could also experience all the things that we do. If you're around tomorrow, I'd love to see you at our Christmas Eve service At 5:30, but please know, wherever you are, and whoever you are with, I'm sending you love. Friends, may you love God, embrace beauty, and live life to the fullest, knowing that the light of the world has indeed come.

THIS WEEK

Christmas Eve Service- Wednesday, December 24th, 5:30pm

BRUNCH CHURCH- Sunday, December 28th, 10:45
The Sunday after Christmas each year, we have Brunch Church. There’s a bit of a liturgy throughout the meal, but we mainly just get together, eat brunch, and reflect on the year. Bring a brunch dish to share. Ubc will provide mimosas, zero-proof mimosas, and coffee.

NICOLE’S POST

The first time I went to church as an adult, after college, after some distance, it was because a coworker invited me. My daughter Georgia was six months old. The pastor only spoke Spanish, which I do not speak, and honestly, that felt kind of perfect for where I was spiritually at the time.

When I walked in, everyone assumed I’d be sending my baby to the nursery. I didn’t. It quickly became clear that this was a very unusual choice in that space. My baby’s noise wasn’t exactly welcomed, and I felt like everyone was staring right at me and my screechy baby. They probably weren’t. Or maybe they were!

Fast forward a few years later, when I tried church again. That baby was now four. I also had a two-year-old Marko and another baby boy, Marin. We sat in a pew-filled church while a priest delivered the message. My kids crawled on the floor. They knocked over the kneelers…each one crashing down with a dramatic BOOM. And I kid you not, one child yelled “BORING!!!” in the middle of the service. Truly horrific.

Why am I telling you this? I honestly don’t know. Maybe I just need to reiterate that my life is chaotic and that I’ve embraced it the best I can.

But also because this Sunday is Family Church Sunday. It’s one of our quarterly reminders that there is room for all of our UBC-ers, every age, every stage. There is room for our chaos. Room for floor-crawlers and inappropriately timed “BORING!”s (though, for the record, Andie is anything but boring).

One of my favorite threads of UBC is our commitment to the idea that there is no separation between the sacred and the secular. It’s all holy. The joyful noise. The messiness of real life. There is enough space for it all, and we want it all.

I love having your kids in our nurseries and classrooms. And I love having them in the service. They are welcome in whatever way makes sense for you and your family. And Andie says it every time and she means it: let them make noise. We love it, and we love them.

So if church is a little louder this Sunday, or if Marin Dizdar sends a crayon flying, just call it what it is: our church family doing family things.

LITURGY OF MOURNING

Several years ago, we attached a liturgy to our calendar to remind us to take time to give voice to feelings of mourning and lament in our lives. Emotions are part of the equipment that allow us to participate in the world around us and within us. Some are easier to give space to than others, but they are all important, truth-bearing embodied messengers. Mourning, sadness, grief, lament, dereliction, etc. are of a variety that we generally wish to avoid, but if we give them space, we might find ourselves more aware of that which is important to us, more grateful, more connected to our neighbor, more connected to God, and more human, in general. Our Liturgy of Mourning is this Thursday at 5:30pm. It is about 30 minutes long. There will be childcare and we’ll have soup if you want to stick around after. If you have any questions or want more info, email jamie@ubcwaco.org.

Today is Giving Tuesday. At some point, for whatever reason, our culture decided to stick a date on the calendar as an annual reminder to donate to a cause you find important. It can be nice to have a reminder like that. ADVENT BOOK STUDY

Starting Monday, December 1st, Andie is leading an Advent book study on Walter Brueggemann’s Names for the Messiah on Mondays from 6:45-7:45. Childcare is available! Here’s the back-of-the-book description: Isaiah 9:6, a divine utterance is given to us using four royal titles--Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Names for the Messiah ponders each title and how the people understood it then, how Jesus did or did not fulfill the title, and how Christians interpret Jesus as representative of that title.

Christians have claimed from the beginning that Jesus was the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament. In this study, best-selling author Walter Brueggemann tackles the questions: "What were these expectations?" and "Did Jesus fulfill them?"

GIVING

UBC survives on the generosity of our congregation. Your financial contributions allow us to continue to create a space that is welcoming to all, embraces beauty, and seeks to live life to the fullest.

You can give, as you’re able, on Sunday mornings or set up a single or recurring online gift here.

If you ever have trouble with giving online or have a question about how to give, feel free to email administrator@ubcwaco.org.

CHURCH NEEDS

Wanted: MiCasa Hosts!
We have a veritable slew of potential MiCasa participants waiting in the wings and we are looking for hosts and/or facilitators.

Arrow Christmas Gifts
Each year, UBC comes together to partner with Arrow Family Ministries to bring care and encouragement to children and teens in foster care. This partnership is important to our church family and to Arrow ministries. We have been able to provide a good portion of their gifts each year and this is a meaningful way to support the community.

This year, we are collecting gifts for children and teens in three age groups: 0–7, 8–14, and 15–18. Gifts can include toys, games, books, or gift cards…anything that brings joy to kids of various ages.

Gifts can be dropped off at UBC in Nicole’s office through November 28.

HEB Gift Card Drive

Want to help other people buy groceries? We have created a drop down in our giving app labeled “HEB Gift Cards,” and any money you contribute to that fund will be spent on that endeavor. Also, if you are a person who would benefit from grocery assistance, you can email any of the pastoral staff, and we will get you connected with resources.

Town Hall and Vision Sesh

This week was a banner week for UBC as we spent some time taking stock of where we are and where we are headed in 2026.  As you may know, at the end of each year our staff sits down and reflects over the previous season and dreams about what could be on the horizon.  We were able to give updates at Town Hall on Sunday and took time yesterday to do some visioning for 2026, so here's the skinny.

Here's some highlights from Town Hall:
-We are excited for our leadership to learn and grow together and still have one more spot open if you are interested in joining!
-Our giving has increased this year (thank you!) and we are still $5,000-7,000 under our goal each month before paying Greer's salary.
-Sharing the community pastor responsibilities between myself and Nicole is really fun and is creating more opportunities to spend time together as a congregation.

-We are investing into a new venue housed in The Backside called The Stockroom, a nod to our building's roots as a grocery store.  It'll be an arts and creatives space that will host galleries, storytelling events, concerts and more!

Here's some highlights from our Visioning Sesh:
-We are spending time with the question, "What will our core emphasis be in the upcoming year?"

-The Stockroom, youth room update, and outdoor playground space are major projects for 2026.

-As a staff, we all took note of how the emphasis of engaging has fostered growth and connection in our church and an expanding sense of belonging.

-We love the relationships and dynamics on our team and are grateful for the ministries, studies, and special events/liturgies that are happening on a regular basis.

What can you do?
-Keep showing up!  It has been very cool to see new connections being built and how the different community opportunities are creating crossover for people who don't usually spend time together.

-Want to see something new start at UBC?  Let's talk about it!  The last few months, we've had more congregants take initiative and invite people to get together, start or host an event, and get creative in what they want to see happen at UBC.  This is communal work and we want to hear from you.
-Giving Tuesday is coming! As mentioned above, we are so grateful for the ways UBCers have contributed financially; it is hard for a lot of us right now.  The work we do together is funded together, so please consider giving to UBC on a regular basis or on Giving Tuesday if you're able.  This year we've expanded our community partnership with Caesar Chavez and are exploring adding an elementary school to that partnership in 2026.  We also host two different non-profit community groups and want to increase the use of our building in that way.  Your giving did that, because our community survives on your generosity!

-Reach out!  There are people in our church who are going through hard things, who feel lonely, who wonder if their presence in our congregation matters.  While we do everything we can as a staff to connect with anyone who wants support, this is a community. Maybe it's time to reach out and make a new friend at UBC.

I say this with my whole heart: Pastoring UBC is one of the greatest joys and honors of my lifetime, and I cannot wait to see what this upcoming year brings!

THIS WEEK

Youth Group - Wednesdays @ 6pm
