Psalm 139 (By Taylor)

Hi friends! It’s Taylor here. I have been bumping up against Psalm 139 a lot lately – it has come up in several meaningful ways recently. The most recent way was when an Instagram account I follow called Black Liturgies (@blackliturgies) posted this translation of v.15 -16 a few days ago:

15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.16Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. You knew all the days that would form me when none of them yet existed.”

(By the way – if you don’t follow Black Liturgies you definitely should. Cole Arthur Riley is doig beautiful, meaningful, formative work I the content posted there.)

A lot has happened over the course of the last few weeks. A lot has happened over the course of the last few months and the last few years. And maybe this is my own perception – but it feels as if the world is spinning faster than it used to; as if I cannot catch my breath between catastrophes, and I am running on reserves.

And for some reason these words – and much of Psalm 139 – has been very grounding to me. A reminder that I am seen and known (and loved!) by the Divine. A reminder that though I might feel like a spinning top nothing has come to pass that could not have been foreseen by God. I don’t claim to know how all of it works but it is good to be reminded that it does. And it is always good to be reminded that ,though I play a part, it does not rest solely on me or my knowledge.

So, I hope that will be comforting to you a well today. You are seen and known and loved – way deep down to the very core of who you are. God is with you on the good days and the bad days and the very, very normal days. I hope you rest in that knowledge.

Friends in case you were not able to worship with us Sunday we also wanted to share here about the loss of UBCer Alicia Martinez. Alicia died after battle with COVID19. Alicia volunteered with our children’s ministry, served on parent’s night out and was actively involved in the life of our community. She had advance standing in the social work program at Baylor, and as such had a deepened sense of connection with that subset of our community. Her memorial service will be live-streamed on Friday at 11:30. You can find the link in her obituary which can be found here.
