Sunday School Starts This Sunday

Hello all. Our spring Sunday school classes begin this Sunday. All classes start at 9:30. Sunday school will be provided for youth. Additional information on our other classes listed below:

Book Study: The Soul of the Helper by Holly Oxhandler

In their devotion to the well-being of others, everyday helpers (parents, partners, caregivers, teachers, social workers, faith leaders, therapists, etc.) routinely put their own well-being last and can unintentionally burn out physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In The Soul of the Helper, Dr. Holly Oxhandler shows caregivers and fellow helpers a self-compassionate way to attend to their own needs, particularly when it comes to their mental health and spiritual journey.

With a background in spiritually-integrated mental health, Dr. Oxhandler teaches helpers a seven-step process to slow down and reconnect with the stillness within themselves. It is in this space of stillness that Oxhandler guides helpers to reconnect with the “sacred spark” within their soul. By allowing themselves to enter that stillness, caregivers will recognize that they, too, are worthy of care, as they serve others.

In this Sunday school class, Holly will walk the readers through The Soul of the Helper, including a discussion around the reflective questions and practices elevated in the book.

The Creed led by Daniel Harris

In this Sunday school class we will be exploring one of the historic creeds of the Christian faith, The Apostles Creed. Creeds have long been used as a concise way to explain the core beliefs of the Christian faith. Each week we will explore each line of The Apostles Creed, look at the Biblical underpinnings of each line, and discuss different historical interpretations of the creed. This is a great class for people who are in the process of reconstructing their faith as we'll be asking hard questions like, "Who is God?" "What does it mean to be human?" "What does it mean to be a Christian?" "What is the church and its role in the world?" and many others.

Chili Cook Off

Friends, UBC turns 27 in January. To celebrate and commemorate this event we are asking church champions, that’s you, to bring your best culinary skills to the table and share your secret family chili with us after church on January 23. (Note: as I mentioned Sunday, given the alarming COVID positivity rates, we will continue to keep an eye on the situation and make an announcement later this week).

Youth and 5/6

Gentle reminder that youth starts TOMORROW on 1/19/21. Also reminder, our 5th and 6th graders will start meeting on Wednesdays.

3rd Wednesday

Hello friends, in the spirit of some new goals and because we are bursting with talent within our community, we will be gathering on the third wednesday for particular formational opportutnies. Our first one is January 19th from 6-8 P.M. That evening we will have a conversation with our very own Dr. Jonathan Tran to discuss his new book Asian Americans and the Spirit of Capitalism. Should you desire to ingest a primer on Dr. Tran’s book please listen to this podcast.

Town Hall

On January 23, after the chili cook off (possibly, see above), we will have our quarterly town hall. In this meeting we will give you updated info on UBC behind the curtain kind of stuff.

Pints with Toph
