ANDIE’S POST

Resurrection in All Things

I had a strange conversation recently regarding church work and Easter, and it went a little something like this:

Them: I bet you're super busy this month. Easter is like the Super Bowl in church world.

Me: Yeah, we've got some extra events, but honestly Easter is pretty chill at UBC, and I guess even in my own mind.

Them: Really? I guess I thought Jesus coming back from the dead was a bigger deal. But I guess people prefer Christmas.

I don't think this person meant any disrespect, but it did get me wondering: Why is Easter a smaller deal in my mind than this person had assumed it perhaps should be? The long and the short is that we embrace resurrection in all things, in all ways, and at all times. I so adore the liturgical church calendar and how UBC leans so deeply into it.  The beauty of that is, though we give special emphasis to different parts of the arc of God's story at different times, we always have resurrection in both our front and back views. We name newness and hope, grief and tension, restoration and recovery as they come, AND, we've been here before. As we prepare once again for the acute opportunity to turn our attention to the suffering and risen God-in-flesh, my hope is that we will experience something true and resonate, something fresh, in a familiar story. My hope is that we keep that celebration alive each and every day that follows, and that we will return to it next year made more fully in the likeness of Christ. Christ is risen, risen indeed.
