Old Testament Reading

Today’s Old Testament reading is Micah 5:2-5a:

You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,

Family Retreat in Review

Hi friends! It’s Taylor Post, Children and Families Pastor here to talk to you about how much fun we had on the Family Retreat a couple of weekends ago!

We all went together out to Trinity Pines Conference Center in East Texas to hang out for the weekend! We did crafts, colored murals, had some intentional family time, ate meals together, watched the Big 12 Championship Game, and played outside together! And we finished the weekend with a bonfire and s’mores! We all had such a fun time and I hope you’ll join us next time! It was such a fun way to get to know fellow UBCers and relax! Here are some pictures of all the fun we had!:

OK, one more week of ornament decorating. Let’s make UBC’s tree the most eclectic weird tree on this side the Mississippi. Bring your ornament of choice to add to our tree.

Youth Schedule Holiday/New Year

December 15th // Wednesday: All Grade Groups! Youth Group CHRISTMAS PARTY!!!, UBC Building, 6pm-8pm.
+ There will be various games available, both physical and digital! (This will include a quiz game, Jackbox games, and also a Nintendo Switch!

+ We will also be having a talent show! The winner will receive a $10 giftcard prize!
+ Festive-wear highly encouraged

Okay, on to 2022. The overall schedule is something I'm still finalising (and I'll have that ready for you all in the New Year, along with new Living Calendars!), but I do have the following dates ready for you:

January 8th // Saturday: All Grade Groups! Midwinter Day Retreat, Lake Shore Church Waco, 4pm-11pm

+ This event is a collaboration between UBC Waco, Lake Shore, Calvary, 5th & James, and Hope Fellowship.
+ It is a drop-in, drop-out event, meaning Youth can come and go as needed or wanted!
+ We are really hoping to focus on socialising and connecting as Church communities again, especially after 2020 and 2021.
+ There will be game time from 4pm-7pm, followed by a short formation time, then dinner and a movie to finish!

+ Best of all the whole event, including t-shirts, will be totally FREE!

January 19th // Wednesday:All Grade Groups!Youth Group Spring 2022 Begins!, UBC Building, 6pm-8pm

+ The resumption of our main Youth Group evening begins on the third Wednesday of January!

January 23rd // Sunday MORNING:All Grade Groups!Youth Group Bible Study (Sunday School), UBC Building, 9:45am-10:30am

+ The study content is still TBD, but this is officially where we are relaunching the Bible Study from Monday evenings.

After the Dust Clears

So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

Coffee @ UBC

Hello friends. Riveting news. As you may remember the third week of Advent is always the week in which we talk about Joy. We wanted to do something to embolden that theme in our worshiping lives this Sunday, so we are doing so by bringing coffee back! What about the pandemic? As is the case in most restaurants, we are asking that you be masked when not drinking coffee. However, the most basic rule we are asking everyone to abide by, knowing that drinking coffee and mask policing would be a subjective endeavor, is simply this, please where your mask while/if you are singing. Happy coffee drinking, adverting and enJOYing.

This Sunday UBC will be putting up our festive Christmas tree. In addition to the great ornament collection we own, which is scant, we are asking UBCers that should so desire, to bring an ornament to hang and share with the UBC community. The three will be located in the lobby near the entrance.

Top(h) Golf

The last Top(h) golf will take place tonight at Top Golf. UBC will provide the bay(s). Participants are responsible for any food purchased. So grab your clubs and meet Toph and other golf enthusiasts from 5:15-7:15.

Pints with Toph

Been itching to get a drink with some fellow UBCers. Wednesday Toph will host the final “Pints with Toph” of the semester at Pinewood Coffee Bar and Alcohol Extravaganza. 6-8 P.M.

Opportunities for Giving

Our friends at Cesar Chavez Middle School are hosting their “Make a Wish” program again this year, and they have asked for our help. Students write a short essay on what they would do with $100, and the faculty of CCMS help make some of those wishes come true. This year, instead of gifts being presented to our students, we are asking for gift cards in the amount of $25, $50, $75, & $100 along with Walmart and HEB food cards. You can bring your gifts to UBC, or just contact Toph to arrange a time to pick them up. If you have any questions, contact toph@ubcwaco.org

Also, our friends at Arrow Child and Family Ministries is hosting their annual Christmas Party at UBC, and collecting items for their kids. They have started getting donors to sponsor presents for the children in the homes. If anyone is interested in donating, there are two ways to donate. The first is to directly donate $30 and we will buy the present. People could also sign up and receive information and gift ideas. We ask the gifts to be a minimum of $30. Christmas Eve Service

Champion friends, great news. We will gather again on December 24th for a worship experience that celebrates the story of the birth of Jesus by having a children re-enact it. To that end, if you will be around and plan on worshiping with us that evening, would you let Taylor@ubcwaco.org know so that we can begin casting roles. If you’ve not been before, it’s very impromptu. No need to prepare ahead of time by memorizing lines or lyrics. More like a carol sing and telling of the nativity story. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year!

5th & 6th Graders Update

We will be having our Christmas Party next week! I'm looking forward to seeing everybody today and I'll send you more info about our party this week! But just so you know - parents are welcome and it starts at our normal time!! The kids will be making gingerbread houses and watching a Christmas movie. Also, one more reminder that starting in January, the 5th and 6th grade meeting time will take place on Wednesday evenings.

Youth Update

It is our second to last week of Youth Group this week! We've started a mini Advent series that will conclude on Wednesday, and I'm very excited about it! As another quick heads-up, December 15th will be our last Youth Group event of the year, and it will be our Christmas party! I'll send more details next week, but it will be our usual time and will feature Christmas-y-type games and activities.

We also have Coffee With Kieran! at Pinewood this Sunday afternoon! This will be our last one of the year, so if anyone wants a Christmassy drink on the Youth Group's dime, now is your chance!

One last reminder before we move on to our schedule for the week; we are having an in town Midwinter on January 8th 2022 - it will be free, and hosted by Lake Shore Church from 4pm-11pm. In addition, our Summer Camp planning is underway, and I will send details out in the New Year. I just wanted y'all to have those things in mind as we head into the Holidays and the New Year!

UBC Music Advent EP (Magnificat)

As Jamie mentioned on Sunday, UBC Music recorded an advent EP last year called the Magnificat. In this album includes song Jameson has written specifically with the advent themes and scriptures in mind. If you are new and would like to familiarize yourself with some of our advent songs you can do so by listening on all major platforms including Spotify.

Opportunities for Giving

Our friends at Cesar Chavez Middle School are hosting their “Make a Wish” program again this year, and they have asked for our help. Students write a short essay on what they would do with $100, and the faculty of CCMS help make some of those wishes come true. This year, instead of gifts being presented to our students, we are asking for gift cards in the amount of $25, $50, $75, & $100 along with Walmart and HEB food cards. You can bring your gifts to UBC, or just contact Toph to arrange a time to pick them up. If you have any questions, contact toph@ubcwaco.org

Also, our friends at Arrow Child and Family Ministries is hosting their annual Christmas Party at UBC, and collecting items for their kids. They have started getting donors to sponsor presents for the children in the homes. If anyone is interested in donating, there are two ways to donate. The first is to directly donate $30 and we will buy the present. People could also sign up and receive information and gift ideas. We ask the gifts to be a minimum of $30. Study Hall

Are you a college student who would love a to study, but not at a Baylor University library, an overcrowded coffee house, or your apartment? Boy do we have a winning opportunity for you. On Thursday December 9th the UBC building and it’s eclectic design spaces will be available for studying pleasure. We will also provide unhealthy food products such as: candy, famous Amos cookies, Doritos and the like. So if this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please come on by.

Christmas Eve Service

Champion friends, great news. We will gather again on December 24th for a worship experience that celebrates the story of the birth of Jesus by having a children re-enact it. To that end, if you will be around and plan on worshiping with us that evening, would you let Taylor@ubcwaco.org know so that we can begin casting roles. If you’ve not been before, it’s very impromptu. No need to prepare ahead of time by memorizing lines or lyrics. More like a carol sing and telling of the nativity story. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year!

New Leaders Needed

Hello friends. With January right around the corner we are approaching that time of the church’s life cycle when we need to fill some roles on our teams. We are looking for two new finance team members and a college student representative for the leadership team. If you know someone who would be good for the finance team please email josh@ubcwaco.org. If you would like to nominate a student candidate for the leadership team you can do so here. Descriptions and requirements of those positions are posted below. Lastly, so we are clear, these are volunteer positions.

University Student Lead Team Member

1. Purpose. The Leadership Team shall be the primary decision-making bodyof UBC.  The Leadership Team shall oversee the business and property of the church, and make final decisions regarding hiring and dismissal of staff as well as the acquisition and selling of assets that are beyond budgetary provisions.  

2. Composition.  The Leadership Team shall consist of nine members of the UBC community that are not staff, finance team, or human resources team. Two of the Leadership Team’s nine members shall be university level students. 

3. Term. Members of Leadership Team may serve for a duration lasting up to three years. While they are encouraged to remain the full three years, members may voluntarily remove themselves from their position at any time. Student members shall only commit to a year with the chance to renew up to three years.

Finance Team Member

Purpose.  The Finance Team shall exist for the following purposes:

1. To serve as the primary advisory group for the Leadership Team in all budgetary and financial aspects of the church.  

2. To oversee, in coordination with the ministerial staff, yearly budgetary processes, working to create a financial ministry plan in alignment with the ethos, mission and values of UBC.

3. To advise the staff and Leadership Team on any emergency financial matters that may arise with regards to the physical infrastructure of the church building, as well as those matters pertaining to compensation and benefits of personnel.

4. To assess the current financial status of the church on a monthly basis and advise the staff and Leadership Team on matters concerning changes in planned ministry expenses.

5. To advise the Human Resources/Staff Support team on all financial matters regarding new and existing personnel, including available resources concerning salaries, salary increases, insurance, taxes, etc.

6. To advise the church body on all matters relating to stewardship, financial integrity, etc.

Qualifications. Finance Team members shall have been an active participant in the life of UBC for at least a year, have received at least a bachelors degree level of education (or roughly an equivalent amount of experience in business or finance), and have at least a basic understanding of financial reports and budgets.

Youth Update

I don't have a complete schedule for the New Year yet, but I did want to confirm a few things. First, we will begin Youth Group again sometime in the second half of January. As soon as I have finalised the schedule, I will send out new Living Calendars that will supply all the relevant dates, etc. The second thing is that we will be having a (mini) Midwinter Retreat on January 8th in Waco from 4pm-11pm, hosted by Lake Shore!

To cut a long story short (I am more than happy to supply all the details, if you're interested or curious, but just for the sake of this email I'm cutting it short!), the coalition of churches that we usually go on retreat with saw several personnel changes, most didn't have camps last January, and as such we all fell out of contact. We reconnected last month however, and we've decided to plan an in-town (Waco, that is!) afternoon/evening 1 day Midwinter retreat. We have a final planning meeting this Wednesday, after which I will send out it's own dedicated email, but the great news about all of this is that it is completely free to attend, and will also (very likely) include a free t-shirt to celebrate Midwinter! (for more info on this please see youth email. if you do not receive the youth email please email kieran@ubcwaco.org).

Youth Group Update

Hello team UBC!

Happy week-before-Thanksgiving! We only have one event this week, our usual Youth Group, but I wanted to give you all a heads up as to what the schedule will look like over the next month!

We will be taking a break for Thanksgiving from 21st November to 27th November. This means there won't be any Sunday school on the 21st (I'll still be there at the usual service time!), no Youth Group on the 24th, but we will have Sunday School on the 28th!

After our Thanksgiving break, we will have 3 weeks left of Youth Group this semester, which is wild!

Our LAST Youth Group evening will be on 15th December - which will also be our Christmas party! I don't have full details of what that will entail yet, but I'll make sure to send a thorough email about it in the coming weeks.

Now, with all those notices out of the way, here is the schedule for this week!

November 17th // Wednesday: All Grade Groups! Youth Group, UBC Building, 6pm-8pm.

+ We will be doing a movie night! The plan is to watch Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, which is rated PG-13. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please do get in touch with me!

5th & 6th Grade Update

Reminder, because we know there will be families out on the 21st and the 28th for Thanksgiving so we will not meet for either of those dates.

So we will be back again at our 4:30-6pm time on December 5th and December 12th.

After the 12th we will take a break until sometime in January! I'll keep you guys updated on when that will be!

I am also looking to plan a fun Christmas party for everyone!! I think it would feel more festive at somebody's home! If you are interested in helping plan that moment or interested in volunteering your home let me know!
So - here's what the next few weeks will look like:
November 21 and 28: Thanksgiving, no meeting!
December 5 and 12: At UBC at 4:30-6pm, normal content

Christmas Party! - no set date yet!

New Leaders Needed

Hello friends. With January right around the corner we are approaching that time of the church’s life cycle when we need to fill some roles on our teams. We are looking for two new finance team members and a college student representative for the leadership team. If you know someone who would be good for the finance team please email josh@ubcwaco.org. If you would like to nominate a student candidate for the leadership team you can do so here. Descriptions and requirements of those positions are posted below. Lastly, so we are clear, these are volunteer positions.

University Student Lead Team Member

1. Purpose. The Leadership Team shall be the primary decision-making bodyof UBC.  The Leadership Team shall oversee the business and property of the church, and make final decisions regarding hiring and dismissal of staff as well as the acquisition and selling of assets that are beyond budgetary provisions.  

2. Composition.  The Leadership Team shall consist of nine members of the UBC community that are not staff, finance team, or human resources team. Two of the Leadership Team’s nine members shall be university level students. 

3. Term. Members of Leadership Team may serve for a duration lasting up to three years. While they are encouraged to remain the full three years, members may voluntarily remove themselves from their position at any time. Student members shall only commit to a year with the chance to renew up to three years.

Finance Team Member

Purpose.  The Finance Team shall exist for the following purposes:

1. To serve as the primary advisory group for the Leadership Team in all budgetary and financial aspects of the church.  

2. To oversee, in coordination with the ministerial staff, yearly budgetary processes, working to create a financial ministry plan in alignment with the ethos, mission and values of UBC.

3. To advise the staff and Leadership Team on any emergency financial matters that may arise with regards to the physical infrastructure of the church building, as well as those matters pertaining to compensation and benefits of personnel.

4. To assess the current financial status of the church on a monthly basis and advise the staff and Leadership Team on matters concerning changes in planned ministry expenses.

5. To advise the Human Resources/Staff Support team on all financial matters regarding new and existing personnel, including available resources concerning salaries, salary increases, insurance, taxes, etc.

6. To advise the church body on all matters relating to stewardship, financial integrity, etc.

Qualifications. Finance Team members shall have been an active participant in the life of UBC for at least a year, have received at least a bachelors degree level of education (or roughly an equivalent amount of experience in business or finance), and have at least a basic understanding of financial reports and budgets.

Old Testament Reading

Today’s Old Testament reading, and Josh’s sermon text, is 1 Samuel 1:4-20:

On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.”

As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.” And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer.

They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.”

New Testament Reading

Today’s New Testament reading is Mark 13:1-8:

 Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.”

They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

All Souls Liturgy

Without higher quality material to work with, God resorts to working through us for others and upon us through others.  Those are some weirdly restorative, disconcerting shenanigans to be caught up in: God forcing God’s people to see themselves as God sees them, to do stuff they know they are incapable of doing, and make them to be both humble recipients and generous givers of grace, so that they may be part of God’s big project on earth.

Living God, we have gathered to remember

Old Testament Reading

Today’s Old Testament reading, and Josh’s sermon text, is Ruth 1:1-18:

In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion; they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. When they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Chilion also died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

Then she started to return with her daughters-in-law from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had considered his people and given them food. So she set out from the place where she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of Judah. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back each of you to your mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband." Then she kissed them, and they wept aloud. They said to her, "No, we will return with you to your people." But Naomi said, "Turn back, my daughters, why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I should have a husband tonight and bear sons, would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, it has been far more bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has turned against me." Then they wept aloud again. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.

So she said, "See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.”

But Ruth said,

“Do not press me to leave you
or to turn back from following you!

Where you go, I will go;
Where you lodge, I will lodge;

your people shall be my people,
and your God my God.

Where you die, I will die—
there will I be buried.

May the Lord do thus and so to me,
and more as well,

if even death parts me from you!”

When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her.

New Testament Reading

Today’s New Testament reading is Mark 12:28-34:

One of the scribes came near and heard the Saducees disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’ —this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.

We will head to a lake house in East TX to spend some time reflecting on how Christians engage with the world, and getting to know each other better. The cost of the retreat is $30, and includes all meals and lodging. If you don’t have the money, no worries, we have some generous folks who will help pay your way. “I know that you can do all things,

Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.
