Liturgy Stuff 1-30-2022

January 30, 2022

***Special thanks to Colton Towns for playing music while Jamie is out of town***

Below, you’ll find the song lyrics and scripture readings for the live stream on January 30th (in the order they are needed).

Your Love Is Strong

dear Heavenly Father you’re always amazing
let your kingdom come in my world and in my life
you give me the food I need to live through the day
and forgive me as I forgive the people who’ve wronged me
lead me far from temptation; deliver me from the evil one

I look out the window, the birds are composing
and not a note is out of tune or out of place
I walk through the meadow and stare at the flowers
better dressed than any girl on her wedding day
so why do I worry, why do I fear
god knows what I need—you know what I need

your love is, your love is, your love is strong

the kingdom of the heavens is now advancing
invade my heart, invade this broken town
the kingdom of the heavens is buried treasure
would you sell yourself to buy the one you’ve found
two things you told me: that you are strong and you love
yeah, you love me

your love is, your love is, your love is strong

our god in heaven, hallowed be thy name above all names
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
give us today our daily bread, forgive us weary sinners
and lead us far from our vices and deliver us from these prisons

Call to Worship

we have gathered to worship the Living God

the One who is our rock and fortress,
our refuge in the midst of the storm

to enter the story of God

and find our own stories reimagined

that the Spirit of God might form us in the way of Christ

that we might learn to love God
and love our neighbor
with our ordinary lives

amen

Deliver Me

deliver me out of the sadness
deliver me from all the madness
deliver me, courage to guide me
deliver me, your strength inside me

all of my life, i’ve been in hiding
wishing there was someone just like you
now that you’re here, now that i’ve found you
I know that you’re the one to pull me through

deliver me, loving and caring
deliver me, giving and sharing
deliver me, this cross that i’m bearing

all of my life, i’ve been in hiding
wishing there was someone just like you
now that you’re here, now that i’ve found you
I know that you’re the one to pull me through

There

before there were mountains to crumble
before there were seas to rise
before there was pain, the loss and the weight
you were there, you were there, you were there

although our fear is rising
although our fire has gone out
although our hearts are worried and fraught
you are there, you are there, you are there

i’ve got a problem, i’ve made a drug
of worrying over what is yet to come
it’s clouding my vision, strangling my love
away

after the sun stops burning
after the stars have gone out
after the world ceases to turn
you’ll be there, you’ll be there, you’ll be there
you’ll be there, you’ll be there, you’ll be there
you’ll be there, you’ll be there, and we’ll be there

Quietest Friend (by Pedro the Lion)

Staving off rejection
Which always hurt like hell
I took the devil's bargain
Made a stranger of myself
If anything was wrong I couldn't tell

So I didn't see it coming
But now it's pretty clear
I traded my own wisdom
For a jury of my peers
I ignored you for 30 years

You don't have to tell me
How hard it must have been
For you to let me in
Nothing lasts forever
Now I understand
I hurt you again
My quietest friend

Fifth grade in the lunchroom
Fickle friends were telling jokes
Making you the punchline
Of some random thing I wrote
They were looking to me
To land the final blow

Just to be included
Went straight up to my head
I thought the joke too stupid
For it to matter what I said
I was wrong
But I went along with it

You don't have to tell me
How hard it must have been
For you to let me in
Nothing lasts forever
Now I understand
I hurt you again
My quietest friend

We could write me some reminders, I'd memorize them
I could sing them to myself and whoever's listening
I could put them on a record about my hometown
Sitting here with pen and paper
I'm listening now

Old Testament Reading

Today’s Old Testament reading is Psalm 71:1-6:

In you, O Lord, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
incline your ear to me and save me.
Be to me a rock of refuge,
a strong fortress, to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.

Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and cruel.
For you, O Lord, are my hope,
my trust, O Lord, from my youth.
Upon you I have leaned from my birth;
it was you who took me from my mother’s womb.
My praise is continually of you.

New Testament Reading

Today’s New Testament reading, and Josh’s sermon text, is 1 Corinthians 7:8-13:

It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. “Food will not bring us close to God.”

We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols?

So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall.

Giving

UBC relies on the generosity of the community. If you are a in place that you are able to give of your time, talent, and resources to UBC we would be grateful. If you want to make a financial contribution, the easiest way to do so is through our church center app.

Be Thou My Vision

be thou my vision o lord of my heart
naught be all else to me save that thou art
thou my best thought by day or by night
waking or sleeping thy presence my light

be thou my wisdom and thou my true word
I ever with thee and thou with me lord
thou my great father, spirit, and son
thou in me dwelling and I with thee one

riches I heed not nor man’s empty praise
thou mine inheritance now and always
thou and thou only first in my heart
high king of heaven my treasure thou art

high king of heaven my victory won
may I reach heaven’s joys o bright heaven’s sun
heart of my own heart whatever befall
still be my vision o ruler of all
