NICOLE’S POST

My four year old son, Marko, was accidentally profound this week, and gave me some words I had been searching for. 

Marko: Mommy, I don’t want to be an astronaut when I grow up anymore.

Me: Oh really? Why the change?

Marko: I like the Earth so much! I don’t want to blast off from it.

I, also, like the Earth so much. Sometimes, when we love something deeply, it also can result in deep heartbreak when we feel it isn’t loving us back. 

I offer this prayer for us this week:

Dear God, thank you for creating an Earth that is so lovable. Filled with people of all different races, backgrounds, beliefs, families. Help us process the heartbreak we may feel this week; the fear we may have for ourselves or for our neighbors; the disappointment we may feel when what we picture our Earth being doesn’t always align to what it is. May we continue to be an advocate for everyone You have created, and believe that together, we can be a picture of your limitless love and grace. Amen.

ANDIE’S POST

Holding Space

Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Repeat.
A LOT.

I want to acknowledge the weight that many (if not all!) of us are feeling as we prepare to receive election results.  It makes me miss the days of a simpler faith; one that allowed me the leeway to flippantly declare, "Jesus is on the throne" and move on with my day.  The ability to "Let go and Let God" seems so far away, and yet I am longing for it in profound ways.  Regardless of the results, some will celebrate and some will grieve.  Families will be impacted.  Friendships will be tested.  Anxiety will creep in at 3 in the morning.  If you'll allow me to share a bit of pastoral care with you, please receive this blessing that I sent to the rest of the staff this morning:

May our fears invite us into deeper empathy for the marginalized. May our hopes remind us that we do not exist for ourselves alone. May our peace be found in the One who sides with the vulnerable.

My friends, it might be trite to look at what is at stake and say, "Jesus is on the throne."  Still I find myself returning there with a fresh conviction that the work of loving the world in the name of Christ is one of the only constants this life affords.  Regardless of who sits in the Oval Office, our call is to welcome the stranger, set free the prisoner, care for the vulnerable, and shine a light in the darkness because our Light has not been overcome.  I am with you in this space of inbetween, and my hope is that we all find the fortitude to care for those in our midst whose burden of dread seems all-consuming. The beauty of the body of Christ is that when we care for each other, no one is left out of the cold.  May you feel the warmth of the Light of the world and of one another today and in these impending days.  With love, Andie.

TOPH’S POST

Election Season

The UBCYP crew gathered at my place last week, and we had a civil discussion around the upcoming election.  I only proposed one question for our conversation: what is one of the driving issues in this election that is guiding the way you will vote?   The answers varied from immigration to reproductive rights, to the economy/taxes, and a general concern for democracy to name a few.  I’d be interested, for each of you reading this article, to know what are the issues you care most deeply about in this season that are guiding your vote?  
In full transparency, one of the main driving issues I am concerned with is immigration.  I’ve been thinking a lot about immigration recently, particularly in preparation for Andie and I’s trip to the southern border with Fellowship Southwest.  While we were along the US/Mexico border, in Brownsville, McAllen, and Reynosa, we had the opportunity to learn from different organizations and pastors about the immigration crisis and the US’s complicity in creating the crisis.  One partner said something that stuck with me: immigration policy is literally life and death.  

In the Gospel of Luke, in chapter 4, Jesus announces his “ministry plan” to the religious leaders in his hometown when he reads from the Isaiah 61: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God repeatedly directs God’s people to take care of the alien and foreigner among them, to love our neighbors as ourselves, to care for the most vulnerable in our society with a self-sacrificial love.  Recently I have been reflecting on a question I read many years ago: would you rather vote for someone who benefits you more than the rest of society, or vote for someone who benefits the rest of society more than you?  The second greatest commandment, according to Jesus, is to love our neighbor, and if we are willing to vote for the candidate that benefits ourselves more than the rest of the society, we are no longer following the inclusive love of Jesus, rather we are worshiping capitalism.  

Over the next week, as you think about whom you will vote for, my hope is you will spend time reflecting on the most vulnerable in our society, reflecting on those who are on the margins, and in doing so you will find Jesus among them calling us to join him.

We will be tailgating this Saturday from 4-7pm, and we will have hotdogs and beer for you to enjoy!  Our tailgate spot is near the law school, on the main walkway to bridge.  If you are coming, we would love to know so we know how many hot dogs to buy, you can email toph@ubcwaco.org if you didn’t sign-up in the foyer.  Right now there is a strong chance of thunderstorms, so we will make the call on whether the tailgate is happening or not at noon on Friday.  Please check our social for the update.

ANDIE’S POST

Hocus Pocus it's Hard to Focus!

If you have spent more than five minutes in a room with me, you are probably aware of my affinity for all things spooky.  I loved trick-or-treating as a kid, even though my costumes were always underneath a snow suit in snowy Alaska.  I liked the silly little ghost that oooOOOoooed at me from its string in my childhood living room, and I frequently stole the spider rings from the cotton cobwebs in our hallway.  Much to my sadness, though, I spent a chunk of my adult life fearing SpookySzn.  What if the devil was somehow more active in October?  What if I was dabbling in darkness?  That anxiety eventually extended to Easter.  After all, the "secular" celebration of the Big Bunny was rooted in fertility. Was I somehow glorifying the temple prostitution of old?  While I write this with a wink and a nod, the reality is that I allowed legalism masquerading as obedience to steal the joy of finding Jesus in creative and quirky places.  What if there truly is no separation between the lives we live and the God we worship?  What if instead of fearing that we might accidentally wander out of God's presence we remember that every step we take is within the love and nearness of the Spirit?  I have spent too much time with a split focus: one eye on Jesus and the other on the potential spiritual hazards of this life.  I've left that road behind, and am happy to report that the view from here is marvelous.  In place of fear, I choose to embrace fun.  Instead of perfectionism, I choose to embrace playfulness.  Instead of giving one more thought to the stress and anxiety of driving God away, I am confidently leaning into the reality that She likes me too much to leave.  Happy Halloween, my friends, may your candy bags overflow with more treats than tricks!

The story explores how the church offers protection for those who are hurting from the cruelties of the world outside, echoing the Cove’s mission here in Waco. Featuring a live orchestra and partnering with Central Texas Choral Society for a full choir, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to support two local non-profits in our community and see an absolute masterpiece of theatre art! ANDIE’S POST

VisionQuest 2025 Part Deux (and a bonus post!)

We gathered, we visioned, we quested (we also ate a ton of Baris, but that is less the point)!  Our staff sat down and took stock of where we saw God at work in our congregation and in our ministries over 2024, and reflected on the value and impact of lightening.  What we have experienced together is a great sense of excitement, life, and hope at UBC.  In the coming year, and yes I know we still have the great month of Hallowthanksmas ahead, we want to focus on the concept of engagement and engaging.  How do we more fully engage within our church community?  How do we more fully engage our broader community of Waco?  How do we continue to cultivate UBC so that it is an engaging place to find relationships, safety, growth, and a sense of belonging?  I am excited about the myriad ways in which we can explore and be formed together as we weave "engage" into 2025.  For now, and especially as political discourse continues to intensify, may you feel the light and lightening love of Jesus who exchanges his rhythms of grace for our chaos and uncertainty.

Last weekend, 35ish UBCers headed to Glen Rose, TX for a family-style all church retreat and let me tell you: It filled a space in my soul that I didn't know was empty.  I definitely didn't get any sleep, and I smelled like bug spray, smoke, and marshmallows for longer than I care to admit, but being together to pause and laugh and eat and learn and hike and breathe was a beautiful and formative experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life.  Our youngest UBCer in attendance was 7 weeks old, and our oldest had a handful of decades on our youngest.  That was part of the fun and puzzle inherent in creating an experience that made space for everyone.  At times it was loud, a little chaotic, and WOW can our kids and teens put away snacks, but watching so many people I love share deep conversation and connection was incredible.  It felt very on brand for UBC in that way.  Thank you for a very dear reminder that when the Church makes a way to root herself in deference to one another, in mutual love, and in grace, we are all formed more fully in the way of Christ.

WACO HIGH TEACHER APPRECIATION

The Cove Goes to Paris

Every day, the Cove offers sanctuary to teens in our community who need a place of rest. This fall, Waco Civic Theatre is presenting Victor Hugo’s classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame, featuring music from the Walt Disney film. The story explores how the church offers protection for those who are hurting from the cruelties of the world outside, echoing the Cove’s mission here in Waco. Featuring a live orchestra and partnering with Central Texas Choral Society for a full choir, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to support two local non-profits in our community and see an absolute masterpiece of theatre art! This poem by Amy Kay has been speaking to me recently. My twenties thus far have been an evolving definition of friendship and family. As a newly-moved-out-adult, I thought that quality time with friends always involved intense, emotional conversations. As time went on, I found myself instead finding the most enjoyment in fun hangouts - movies, games, or just running errands together. Lately, I’ve been loving watching weekly tv shows with friends. I’ve appreciated the predictability of knowing I’ll see someone I care about on a certain day, and that I’ll get to enjoy a shared interest. Phone calls have also been growing on me. With one of my closest friends recently moving out of state, we’ve been finding new ways to feel connected to each other. 

This past weekend, staff met to consider what our focuses will be going into 2025. (is the plural of focus foci?) One thing that resonated with all of us was a desire for UBCers to feel that they are in meaningful relationships with each other, whatever that may look like. My request to each of you today is to consider what friendship is to you in this time of life: is it the sauce and the salad? is it fantasizing about building a commune with people you care about? is it asking or being asked about your new meds? or is it all of it?

ANDIE’S POST

VisionQuest 2025 

Earlier this year, Jamie, Toph, and I sat in my living room dreaming about the upcoming year in the life of UBC. It felt a little premature, because I was just getting to know who UBC is myself. This Sunday, Nicole and Jess are joining us as we envision what God may have for our congregation in the upcoming year. As I reflect on the growth that has already taken place, I get happy little butterflies thinking about how we will once again merge our history and our future. As we look forward to the last three months of the year, I can't wait to continue to incorporate our 2024 theme of lightening into Advent, the season in which we wait for the Light of God to break into the darkness. My ongoing hope for UBC is that we are people who carry the lightness of Jesus to those who are weary beyond expression. Please hold the staff of UBC close as we seek to listen to the Spirit of God together. Words can't express the love and gratitude I hold for UBC, but that's not going to stop me from trying! Check back in two weeks for a VisionQuest update!

NICOLE’S POST

Hey there! Nicole here. I can’t believe I’ve been here at UBC as the kids’ pastor for nearly three months. I still wake up every single morning feeling so grateful to work a job that is a dream! Thank you for how you’ve welcomed me, Duke and my energetic children with open arms. 

On energetic children and parenting- oftentimes I find myself thinking “why don’t I know what to do right now?” when my kids truly amaze me with their behavior…and not like “you’re amazing!” but “I’m amazed that I can’t figure out why you’d do such a thing.” Attending college for elementary education and child development, completing masters coursework in counseling and child brain development, teaching for eight years, and having three little kids, sometimes I feel like I should have it all figured out. But I don’t! 

I have figured out a few things though. We live in the “gentle parenting” times, and one of my favorite champions of the movement is Dr. Becky Kennedy, who wrote a book titled “Good Inside”. She centers on the belief that all humans are inherently good in their core, including children. This approach allows us to view children’s behavior through a lens of compassion and understanding, rather than punishment or shame. By acknowledging and connecting with a child’s feelings, we can guide them more effectively. Essentially, we are separating the behavior from the child. As adults, we model emotional regulation, kindness and compassion to our children. We find out the “why” behind the behaviors. I often say I’m healing myself as I parent.

Why am I writing about this? I think this has been heavily on my mind as I think about the church as a whole. We aren’t “big church” and “kid church” and “youth group” and all the little things UBC is made of, but we are the sum of all of those parts, a complete and whole family under the UBC roof. A family where you are accepted just as you are, loved and cared for through your highs and lows, a community of adults, teenagers, children, babies, parents, college students…and we have a great gift of modeling love, patience, and understanding to our UBC family every time we interact. There is no shame, divisive or hateful speech from the pulpit, or expectations around how things “should” be. UBC does these things so well, and I’m so thankful this is where my own children will be raised. A sense and feeling of belonging to a community is so incredibly important as humans, and knowing we can belong to a community that loves us where we are at is a gift. 

Thank you, UBC, for your constant reminder that we are all “Good Inside.”

ALL CHURCH RETREAT

THE DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS THURSDAY!

The UBC All Church Retreat is October 4-5th.  We will be heading to Glen Lake Camp and Conference Center in Glen Rose, Texas.  We can check in anytime after 1, but we would ask you arrive by 7pm for our first formation time together.   On Friday evening we will have a campfire with a s’mores and hot cocoa bar, and then we will have several actives together on Saturday before departing at 5pm to return to Waco.  We are very excited about this time together as a church, and would love for you to come.  The cost is $55 for an individual, and for families it is capped at $125.  Use this link to sign-up: UBC Retreat  You can email toph@ubcwaco.org with any questions.

Happy Pastorversary to Me!

Sunday the 15th marks my one year anni at UBC.  My very first meeting was on a beautiful Friday morning at Pinewood.  I sat across a picnic table from Emily MacDonald and heard all about her plans for our youth ministry.  She shared about her life and about her time at UBC.  After she left, I sat there, took some deep breaths, and tried not to cry.  I was so excited, and so nervous, and so hopeful, and I felt so inadequate.  There was a fairly constant voice in my head telling me that this place was too good to be true, and that if it was actually this good, I would ruin it.  It is with massive relief that I can report neither of those scenarios panned out.  So with that said, here's a list of things that made me fall in love and stay in love with UBC:

1) You get what you see and you see what you get.  UBC doesn't shrink itself to fit into molds that are palatable but harmful.  

2) We have a genuine and invested staff.  Every single time I leave a one-on-one with one of our staff members I think to myself, "That was so freaking fun." Not only do I get to share the work of UBC, we get to share our lives.

3) The congregation as a whole is thoughtful, curious, kind, welcoming, and open.  On my first Friday at Pinewood, I saw three UBCers and was met with the warmth and connection that represents our church to this day.  

4) UBC is filled with people who want to see the love and equity of Jesus become a reality even as we are defining and redefining what that means for us as individuals.  

My list is infinite, but for the sake of your sanity I'll stop there.  If UBC was in Timbuktu, I would live in Timbuktu.  Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart. Pastoring at UBC is one of the greatest privileges of my life.  I love you all.

Recently, the affirming branch of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) merged with the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB).  As an affirming congregation, UBC is a great fit for AWAB. Here is a link where you can weigh in on this potential new affiliation.

The Cove - restocking supplies

Our friends over at The Cove are running short on some supplies, and we have agreed to help them restock.  The Cove is a Waco-based nonprofit designed to provide a safe space for youth experiencing homelessness to access the resources they need.  The items most needed now are full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion.  They are also in need of feminine hygiene - specifically pads.  Would you consider purchasing some of these items and bringing them to UBC the next two Sundays to help our friends at the Cove?  There will be a place outside Toph’s office for you to drop these items off.  If you have any questions, please contact toph@ubwaco.org

TOPH’S POST

Greetings! It has been wonderful getting back in the swing of things after my sabbatical, and the best part has been seeing many of your lovely faces on Sundays and at Pinewood. What a gift it is to be given a sabbatical, and even more so to have the support of my community, family, and friends. The summer was rejuvenating in many ways and has allowed me to fulfill some dreams of exploring new places. Over the course of the summer, I’ve had the privilege to visit two new continents, spend time in the mountains of New Mexico, see friends in Denver, and spend a good chunk of time in Austin. This sabbatical was truly about rest, and rejuvenation, and I am excited to be back with y’all after my time away.

We have a couple of current opportunities to support some of our community partners right now. Our friends over at The Cove are running short on some supplies, and we have agreed to help them restock.  The Cove is a Waco-based nonprofit designed to provide a safe space for youth experiencing homelessness to access the resources they need.  The items most needed now are full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion.  They are also in need of feminine hygiene - specifically pads.  Would you consider purchasing some of these items and bringing them to UBC the next two Sundays to help our friends at the Cove?  There will be a place outside Toph’s office for you to drop these items off.  If you have any questions, please contact Toph.

The second opportunity is this coming Sunday, and we will be writing words of encouragement to the teachers and staff at Cesar Chavez Middle School. CCMS is our longest standing community partner, and we want to help them kick off the year with some words of encouragement. After church this Sunday, we will have two tables set-up with pens and paper for you to write an encouraging word, and we will also have a large poster for kids to write an encouraging word or draw a picture as well. Will you take 5-10 minutes after church this week to gather as a community and write a note for our friends at CCMS? If you have any questions before Sunday, contact Toph.

JOINING AWAB

Recently, the affirming branch of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) merged with the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB).  As an affirming congregation, UBC is a great fit for AWAB. Here is a link where you can weigh in on this potential new affiliation.

ANDIIE’S POST

Community and Our All UBC Retreat

This week's article will serve as (hopefully!) both an interesting read and a save the date of sorts, and here's why: I've been thinking about community so much as of late, likely due to the convergence of Mae's hospitalization and our impending one year anniversary in Texas.  I can usually get myself around town without an app, I know where every H-E-B is by heart, and I've found my go-to take out spots. We have also been the very grateful recipients of an outpouring of love, support, and gift cards as we settle back into "normal" life this week.  Our annual welcome back lunch was last weekend, and I got to hug people I have missed tremendously for the first time in a few months.  AND, I am continually reflecting on how much intentionality is required to create, build, and maintain connections.  Enter the save-the-date: October 4th and 5th, the weekend of The Feast of St. Francis, we are planning a church-wide retreat.  Details (cost/location/itinerary) will be forthcoming, but for now, at least the dates are on your radar.  I for one cannot wait to spend more time together in a new context, and will be reserving spots for my family and me.  What a cool way to live into the value of community we seek to uphold at UBC.  We have opportunities to be all together throughout the year, but this retreat feels special and important.  I am excited to see how God continues to solidify our connections with one another as we leave the building and enter into deeper friendship.  See you there!

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Infection? (Sung like the nuns, of course)

For me, the strangest part of moving to a new place is the emergency contact dilemma.  Filling out school forms, doctor forms, and employment forms that ask for two, three, or even four names of humans that you trust to know vital information about you is daunting in the best of circumstances.  After all, isn't the true miracle of Jesus having so many close friends in his 30s?  If you haven't heard through the online grapevine, my daughter Mae has been hospitalized since early Friday morning.  She had her first ambulance ride, first of several IVs, and first real threat of surgery.  We have several days of inpatient care ahead of us, and her medical team is taking the "try it and see method" to deal with an infection in her lung.  And while I don't know what treatment looks like, I do know that we have many people here in Texas whose names fit in those emergency contact spaces.  UBCers have fed my family, sent us DoorDash at the hospital, dropped our car, created care packages stocked with candy and fun, and cared for my kids with patience and love.  I don't know how you solve a problem like infection, but I do know that community takes care of a lot of the other things that life will inevitably throw at you.  When I stand in front of you Sunday mornings and tell you that I love you, please know that I mean it with every fiber of my being.  UBC, I love you, and I felt your love for me and mine.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

ANDIE’S POST

Final Thoughts On Jonah

July has been one of my favorite months at UBC to date.  Not only were there incredible workshops available that taught me something new each week, but I was once again reminded of my own humanity through the humanity of Jonah.  Jonah ran.  Jonah tried again.  Jonah triumphed.  Jonah pouted.  I think I've done all of those things already today and it isn't even ten o'clock!  Part of the value of scripture is the assurance that we are never too far gone.  And while the Bluey episode "Baby Race" has taught us that comparison truly is the thief of joy, it is a gift in many ways that the stories in the Bible are not those of the religious elite (and when they are, they are examples of what not to do).  Our standards somehow exist in both becoming the likeness of Christ and in the fumblings and failures of our "heroes" of faith. I am forever grateful for the dissonance caused by a great God doing great things among ordinary people. My hope is that you have found value in the fears, failings, and faith of Jonah, and that you find fresh energy in following God into whatever space and place God is inviting you.  May we listen anew to the ways in which God is leading us as individuals and as a community.

NICOLE’S POST

Donuts are for Sundays 

Hi UBC! Nicole here. I just finished my third Sunday as UBC's kids' pastor, and I'm writing this with my 15 month old baby napping in my arms, while my other two children explore every toy this church has to offer on this rainy Monday morning. This is their new favorite place to be. Reflecting on the whirlwind of my life in the past month, I am filled with so much gratitude to be serving the families of UBC. My own children actually- and I'm not exaggerating- JUMP out of bed on Sundays, excited about donuts and friends and their teachers that day and activities and toys and that "mama is gonna be right there!" and all the things UBC has offered them. They also have a huge affinity for the peppermints, even though they cringe over mint toothpaste? Who knows.

I have been so impressed with the volunteer engagement in the classrooms, and how well the volunteers love and serve the kids here at UBC. My mind immediately goes to the gift that the volunteers are giving the caretakers of our wonderful UBC kids- the adults are able to freely engage in their spiritual formation during our church service, and their kids are in a loving, safe space. This is truly such a blessing for not only the kiddos, but all of their caretakers as well. Thank you, volunteers!

Looking towards the fall, I have so much excitement and energy as I think of all the possibilities our kids' program has to offer our church and greater community. Dreading Thanksgiving dinner with Uncle Bob?  Unsure how to pray in a way that doesn't put you to sleep or make you feel like you're talking to the wall?  Want to integrate your spiritual life into your actual life?  Do you recognize that the planet is burning but feel helpless to stop it?  K, that was a lot of questions, but the point is we have a workshop for that!  Every Sunday in July, we are offering a different workshop that coordinates with a special sermon series through the book of Jonah.  Join us at 9:30 as we explore Civil Discourse, Creative Prayer, Integrated Living, and Sustainability in the context of our 2024 theme of Lightening.  Childcare will be available on a first come first serve basis (10 spaces). Register in the lobby if you plan on bringing your kiddos!

TOWN HALL SUMMARY

We gathered, we listened, we Town Halled!

Here's a little sum up of what we discussed last Sunday:

Staffing Updates:
-We are so thrilled to welcome Nicole Dizdar as UBC's new kids pastor.  Nicole is bringing years of teaching experience and a passion for social-emotional growth and learning to the kiddos of UBC.  She is settling into the role, evaluating our classroom's ages, structure, and curriculum, and looking forward to connecting with families. If you see her on a Sunday, make sure you say hi!
-Youth Pastor Search: So far, we have not received any applications that we are pursuing, but will continue to work diligently to find the right person for UBC.  I whole-heartedly believe that they exist, and they are worth the wait!

-Toph's Sabbatical: Are you missing Toph?  Of course you are! Take heart, he'll be back from sabbatical next month.  In the meantime, big thanks to those who are stepping in to keep us connecting this summer.

Denomination Update:
UBC is affiliated with CBF, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  The affirming branch of CBF has recently merged with the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB).  We are in discussion about joining AWAB in addition to our affiliation with CBF.  Our membership in AWAB will communicate our ongoing theological commitment to affirm and welcome all of our LGBTQIA+ siblings.  Please check out AWAB here: https://awab.org/.  We would love your input as we explore this potential relationship.

Mark your calendars for our ALL CHURCH RETREAT!!  UBC is having a sleepover!  October 4th and 5th we are heading to a retreat center and spending time together as a community.  We are working to keep costs low, and more information will be available as the retreat draws closer, but save the date for an incredible community-wide experience!

TOWN HALL THIS SUNDAY

Hear ye! Hear ye! Town Hall approaches! Okay, I probably won't ever do that again, but the sentiment remains: Town Hall is coming!  Join us THIS SUNDAY the 14th immediately after church.  UBC has had an incredible year thus far, and we are excited to offer updates and visioning to keep those good vibes going.  

• At Town Hall, you'll have a chance to:
  Hear from our new kids pastor, Nicole Dizdar, and share your hopes and dreams for kids ministry moving forward.

• Receive a financial update

• Hear about upcoming events, vision, and a potential new ministry partner

• Have an all-around good time!

Stick around after service and share in this important part of community life.  May we embrace beauty together as we seek God for the next season in our church!

IMPORTANT NEED

Backpack Drive

Are you done with school but long to buy school supplies again? The fresh highlighters, the crisp folders, the cool non-scratchy pens. Well then I've got good news for you. Each year, UBC partners with Arrow Family Ministries to provide backpacks and school supplies to local families. This year, UBC has committed to 20 backpacks and the school supplies to go with them! If you're interested in providing a backpack and school supplies, please email Erin Hill at erin.albin1@gmail.com for more information. We need to have the backpacks and supplies to Arrow by July 21st so sign up today!

You are invited to join Dr. David Justice for a summer book study on Martin Luther King Jr.'s final book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?. We will meet on Tuesdays, May 28th-July 2nd.  To register, please email David at David_Justice@Baylor.edu.

David earned his PhD in Theological Studies from Saint Louis University in 2023 and wrote his dissertation on Martin Luther King Jr. He currently serves as a postdoctoral teaching fellow at Baylor University. His research, writing, and teaching try to think about how to move us closer to the Beloved Community. You can find more information on him at his website: profjustice.com.

MEET OUR NEW KIDS PASTOR

Nicole was born and raised in a little town outside of Fort Worth- Azle, TX. She attended Baylor University from 2012-2016, where she earned her Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education with an emphasis on teaching English as a Second Language. Nicole and her husband, Duke, have three kids- Georgia (5), Marko (3) and Marin (1). She has spent the last four years teaching second grade at St. Paul's Episcopal School. Nicole loves spending time with her kids, trying to be outdoorsy, and cooking. She is excited to join the UBC community and lead the Kid's Ministry!
