UBC Congregation, 

We, as a Leadership Team, want to give y’all an update on what we’ve been working on and where we are in our process to fill the Lead Pastor position. 

Since Josh announced his resignation to our team, we have been working diligently to move forward on this process, meeting weekly with each other and communicating with staff and our other essential teams, including the HR team and Finance team. 

Our initial efforts were largely focused on Josh’s transition – ensuring his duties were covered upon his exit, discussing the financial details of hiring an interim pastor, getting up to speed on hiring processes as outlined in our bylaws/handbook, and meeting with staff and other teams to discuss important items to keep us moving forward. 

Shortly after, we began discussing the search committee in more detail, touching base with our teams regarding the self-elected positions and working to form a list of congregational members, with input from staff, that would offer a diverse representation of our community. 

And we’re excited to share today that we have a 9-member Search Committee: 

• Toph Whisnant will serve as the self-elected staff person 

• Katie Valenzuela will serve as the self-elected Leadership Team member 

• Patrick Broaddus will serve as the self-elected HR Team member

We want to make sure you know that as the search committee begins their work, there will be opportunities for congregational feedback during the search process so that all of your concerns and priorities can be heard and valued. We will be working closely with the HR team to discuss congregational feedback throughout this process.

In the meantime, our team has received several applications for the role of Interim Pastor. We are currently evaluating them and hope to fill that role as soon as possible, focusing on the candidate who will be the best fit to support our staff and congregation and share UBC’s values of inclusion and authentic self-expression in Christian community. Our team is also seeking wisdom from sister churches and like-minded organizations who have experienced these types of transitions and have valuable insights to share.

Cesar Chavez MS Thank Yous!

We are gathering gift cards and notes for our teacher friends at Cesar Chavez MS! If you are able it would be very appreciated if you could buy one (or however many you can afford!) $5 gift cards to Sonic or Pinewood (or you’re favorite soda/coffee joint) and come drop it off at the church over the next few Sundays! We are also taking them notes so if you want to write several notes that would also be appreciated! We’ll be taking them to CCMS the last week of April and we would love your help in making sure that every teacher and staff member gets a gift card! If you can’t be at church over the next two Sunday you can just bring them by the church and drop them off with a staff member!

Third Wednesday - Daniel and Lydia Harris and missions (4/20)

Hello all! I (Daniel Harris) wanted to let you all know about this upcoming third Wednesday discussion happening on Wednesday the 20th of this month. Many of you know that Lydia and I are planning on serving with Wycliffe Bible Translators, and we’ve been getting a lot of questions about it. On this third Wednesday, I will be discussing the modern missions movement, Bible translation, and World Christianity. We’ll be digging into hard topics like the history of colonialism in missions, short-term missions, race and missions, and other difficult topics which might arise. We’ll also be discussing whether or not international missions are viable in the 21st century and what models might look like to be a healthy Christian witness to our global neighbors. We hope you will make it!

UBC LGBTQIA+ Community Meetup (4/21)

UBC is excited to host its first LGBTQIA+ Community Meetup. We’ll be meeting on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at Pinewood. This is a time for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to meet one another, connect, and have a fun time. We hope you can join us! Mister Rogers and Grad Luncheon (4/24)

As one of our patron saints Mister Rogers will lead us in worship on April 24th as we recognize our graduates and bless them in whatever work or education they are moving into in their next season of life and affirm them for the skills and knowledge they acquired in this one. We will ask for graduates to introduce themselves and announce their degree (from high school to PhD) and there will be a grad luncheon after church. Community Book Discussion (4/28)

The Advocacy Center is hosting a Community Book Discussion for Sexual Assault Awareness Month over Tarana Burke’s book Unbound. It will be at Cultivate 712 at 7pm on April 28th. Old Testament Reading

Today’s Old Testament reading, and Jason’s sermon text, is Exodus 17:1-7:

From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.”

Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

New Testament Reading

Today’s New Testament reading is Luke 19:28-40:

After telling a parable to the crowd at Jericho, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Lord needs it." Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying,

We, as a Leadership Team, wanted to give y’all an update of where we’re at when it comes to filling the role of Lead Pastor. 

The UBC Personnel & Handbook lays out the following:

“The general employment application process, unless otherwise altered at the approval of the Leadership Team, consists of:

RECEIPT & REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS

After posting the position online, applications will be received via email (HRteam@ubcwaco.org) for a minimum of 3 weeks for pastoral positions. 

Applications will be reviewed by at least a 5-­person job search committee comprised of 1 full-­time staff person (self-­elected), 1 HR Team member (self-­elected), 1 Leadership Team member (self-­elected), and 2 or more congregational members (selected by Leadership Team).”

Our goal, as a Leadership Team, is to make sure that this Search Committee is diverse and inclusive of our community here. We have been working diligently to select the congregational members and hope to announce the Search Committee in the coming weeks. 

Please know that this is the first time that UBC has entered this exact process in terms of hiring a Lead Pastor. We’ve used the structure, as laid out by the handbook/by-laws, for filling other positions, such as Office Manager. We welcome your feedback and ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate this process together.

Hey UBC,

I just wanted to say really quickly that some of my favorite times are when we’re all together. And some of my other favorite times are when I get to be together with my Mi Casa or other smaller groups of UBCers. Especially as we’ve been moving through hard seasons over the past several years I’ve really found that when I say, “I’m so excited to worship with you,” on Sunday mornings I really really mean it. I am thankful for you guys!

We’re putting out our Summer Calendar in April and I really hope you’ll take a look at it and find a couple of eventsWe totally understand that you want to come to and then make a point of attending them. I totally understand if you can’t do that for any and all reasons. But just know that if you can I’d love to see you. I am always excited when any group of us get to be together and I hope you are too!

HR Team Opening

The HR team is looking for someone to serve on the team. This is a volunteer position with a 3 year term but with the option of serving a 2nd term. The purpose and qualifications are listed below. If you are interested in serving on the HR team or have any questions about the position, please email hrteam@ubcwaco.org.

The HR Team is an advisory group to the staff and Leadership Team, providing guidance, support, encouragement, and oversight in personnel matters. This 3‐7 person team of lay members meets at least quarterly to conduct annual reviews of staff, review personnel policies and procedures, oversee hiring of new staff, make plans for staff appreciation and development, and discuss grievances or conflicts that may arise.

HR/Staff Support Team members shall have been an active participant in the life of UBC for no less than one year, have received a bachelor’s degree (or roughly an equivalent amount of experience in personnel management, ministry, or other related field,) and have a demonstrable understanding of organizational management.

Reminders From Leadership Team

Hello UBC Congregation from your Leadership Team!

We hope that you’re faring well after an emotional Sunday. It was a joy to celebrate Josh and the Carneys; it felt like a big UBC Family Reunion. 

As we move forward in this next season of the church, we want to keep y’all up to date with some upcoming dates/information. 

As you all may, or may not know, UBC offers its full time pastors a sabbatical every 5 years. Due to the pandemic, several plans had to be put on hold due to travel, safety, etc. Normally, these sabbaticals are staggered and only one happens a year, but again, due to the pandemic Toph, Taylor, and Jamie will each be taking their sabbaticals in the coming months. 

We, as a Leadership Team, believe it’s vital for our pastors to take the time they need to rest, rejuvenate, and recharge as they continue to serve our congregation. The following are the dates each pastor is planned to be out:

Toph: April 3 - May 22

Jamie: May 30 - August 15

Taylor: September - November 

We hope that, as a congregation, you are comforted in knowing that we are working to make sure that our Sunday mornings and community events continue to function as smoothly as possible. We understand that this is a season of transition, and we hope to offer as much stability as we can. In fact, we believe this is an exciting time for us, as a congregation, to come together and work with one another to build on the foundation that we know UBC has. Now, more than ever, if you are looking to volunteer with children, youth, media (lights & sound on Sunday morning), etc. now is the time to step up! And, if you have skills that you believe you can offer, reach out to us and let us know; we are always open to more help. 

We are hopeful and energized with everything that is to come at UBC, and we cannot wait to see what’s in store. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, please feel free to reach out to any of us on the Leadership Team, that’s what we’re here for!

Jesus Said Love Outreach

UBC Family, we are collecting items for our community partner JSL, for their April outreach. You can learn more about JSL’s work here: https://jesussaidlove.com We are collecting items for 75 care packages to be distributed in the clubs in Waco/Temple/Killeen. These are the items we need: bandages, clear lip gloss or chapstick, gum, travel size deodorant, Advil packages, toothbrushes, and travel size toothpaste. There will be a place in the for you to place these items, contact toph@ubcwaco.org with any questions. The last day for collecting items will be March 27th.

HR Team Opening

The HR team is looking for someone to serve on the team. This is a volunteer position with a 3 year term but with the option of serving a 2nd term. The purpose and qualifications are listed below. If you are interested in serving on the HR team or have any questions about the position, please email hrteam@ubcwaco.org.

The HR Team is an advisory group to the staff and Leadership Team, providing guidance, support, encouragement, and oversight in personnel matters. This 3‐7 person team of lay members meets at least quarterly to conduct annual reviews of staff, review personnel policies and procedures, oversee hiring of new staff, make plans for staff appreciation and development, and discuss grievances or conflicts that may arise.

HR/Staff Support Team members shall have been an active participant in the life of UBC for no less than one year, have received a bachelor’s degree (or roughly an equivalent amount of experience in personnel management, ministry, or other related field,) and have a demonstrable understanding of organizational management. 

Monday Mini-Golf Madness

Join us this coming Monday, March 28th for our first Mini-golf Madness. Meet at TopGolf at 5:30, and bring the family, or friends, or both. Mini-golf is free on Monday’s, so its a great time to hang out and get to know other UBC’ers, while not breaking the bank. If you have any questions, please contact toph@ubcwaco.org. UBC is excited to host its first LGBTQIA+ Community Meetup. We’ll be meeting on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at Pinewood. This is a time for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to meet one another, connect, and have a fun time. We hope you can join us! Josh’s Farewell Potluck

Friends, don’t forget we are doing an old fashioned potluck after church this Sunday to celebrate the Carney’s! Josh has requested various version of meat and potatoes, but please someone bring a vegetable as well. We do have a warmer in the back for a few dishes, or feel free to bring a crockpot and plug it in. UBC will be providing the tableware and drinks, but we need you to bring the food. UBC “This Is 40ish” Women’s Group

This group is for those who identify as female, who are out of college and the young professional world, who are closer to 40ish and older, and are looking for a place to connect with other UBC women. Jesus Said Love Outreach

UBC Family, we are collecting items for our community partner JSL, for their April outreach. You can learn more about JSL’s work here: https://jesussaidlove.com We are collecting items for 75 care packages to be distributed in the clubs in Waco/Temple/Killeen. These are the items we need: bandages, clear lip gloss or chapstick, gum, travel size deodorant, Advil packages, toothbrushes, and travel size toothpaste. There will be a place in the for you to place these items, contact toph@ubcwaco.org with any questions. The last day for collecting items will be March 27th.

UBC Women’s Group

This group is for those who identify as female, who are out of college and the young professional world, who are closer to 40ish and older, and are looking for a place to connect with other UBC women. Also, as with most groups at UBC, age is relative, so if you are keenly interested please reach out to us. The next gathering will be March 25 at 7ish, at Jen Carron’s house. UBC @ the Zoo

Are you staying in Waco for spring break? Looking for something to do? Tomorrow, Wednesday March 9th UBCers of all stripes are meeting at the Waco Zoo for a riveting time of buffalo watching, animal noise listening, and other fun activities. UBC champions will meet at 10:30 for a zoo experience and then eat together afterwards either by purchasing food from the zoo or bringing your own picnic food.

Shrove Tuesday

Letter from Leadership Team

Dear UBC, 

With Josh’s recent announcement that he is leaving UBC, we are entering an important transition season. We, the Leadership Team, wanted to share with you about what’s next for UBC. 

We are currently working with the HR Team, Finance Team, and Staff on implementing pastor hiring procedures as outlined in the UBC By-laws and the Personnel & Organizational Handbook. Specifically, we are working on an interim pastor plan and coordinating the pastor search process.

The Leadership Team is currently forming a 7-person Pastor Search Committee who will lead the search process and will review applications, interview candidates, arrange to hear candidates preach in person, and determine a final recommendation(s). Then staff will interview the final candidate(s) and make their recommendations. Finally, the Search Committee will make a recommendation to the Leadership Team for a decision regarding the hire.

As Katie said Sunday morning, our goal as a Leadership Team is to be transparent and open throughout this process. We want to offer our community stability during this time and we are very hopeful for what the future of UBC looks like. We pray that we continue to uphold the values and hearts of UBC during this time.

First Sunday Meal - March 6 - directly after church

Spring is in the air (except for those two days of week winter creeps back in!), and we are going to spend some time outside. Join us after church on March 6 at Miss Nellie’s Pretty Place in Cameron Park. After church, we encourage everyone to go grab some food and drinks, and bring it to the park for a picnic. We congregate up near the Cameron Park clubhouse, and spend time some hanging out, getting to know one another, enjoying time outside as a community. UBC Mask Policy

Friends, as I announced this past Sunday, UBC will be adopting a mask optional policy going forward. This decision was informed by a few bench marks, namely, the policy of our local school districts, Baylor, and sister churches, but more than that, the information we gathered from DFW epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina. In her blog which can be found here, Jetelina advises that masks be optional in areas where the positive rate has remained below 8% for a week. That is the reality in McLennan County. In addition to this McLennan County has been identified as a yellow county, which means that masks can be optional for qualified individuals. We want to continue to be mindful of the ways the COVID19 continues to affect individuals. To that end if you would like to talk with any of our staff about our mask policy or your own personal health, please reach out.

Youth Update

I hope you're all excited for Spring Break next week! This is our last normal week until then. Just so you have the dates to hand, the Youth Group will be on Spring Break from Sunday 6th March 2022 - Saturday 12th March 2022. Everything is back to normal from Sunday 13th March 2022!

I have another meeting this Friday for our Summer Camp! I'll have more details to share later this week, and then we'll finally be able to start taking payments etc. for spots this summer!

Perhaps, and maybe i’m becoming a bit unhinged on my way out the door, but I draw you attention to this because of my fierce love for the number 2. It is the only even prime and the divisor of half of all numbers from now until infinity. What’s more, today is 2-22-22. An occasion and only happens 9 times a century. One is lucky to witness seven or eight of these her lifetime. The next shall occur in 11 years, 1 month and 1 day. As an added bonus, our good Lord has predestined this on a Tuesday. All U.S. presidents make an imprint on our worlds, but President Trump’s term elicited strong emotional responses in ways that seemed unparalleled. Many have felt disillusioned and/or misunderstood by the church and her relationship with political America, and we want to talk about it. Our friend Justin Rosolino, author of Idiot: Sojourning Soul: A Post-Secular Pilgrimage, will lead us in a discussion about how make sense of our faith in a post-Trumpian world. This event will take place at UBC tomorrow February 16th, from 6:00-8:00 P.M.

Love, Love Feast

Two times a year we gather for a good old traditional Baptist potluck. This one, the Love, Love Feast, has the additional bonus feature of coming to you around Valentines Day. As such, we are requesting that participants not just bring a food, but rather that you bring a food that you love so much! See what we did there, we are avoiding nominal mundane approach to potlucks and adding this electrifying detail. So set your hearts on good food and that potential special someone on Sunday, February 13th at 5:30 P.M. Note, we are also aware that with the additional football game added to the schedule, Super Bowl Sunday will henceforth coincide with Love, Love Feast. To that end, we are glad to let you know that the game will be projected on our one of a kind Jumbotron.

Youth Info

First is that, with 95% certainty, our Summer Camp will be June 5th to June 10th at Schreiner University. After a lot of messing around on Schreiner's end, we've finally settled on this set of dates. It is virtually certain, but given Schreiner's track record with reliability so far, I want to hold off on confirming this 100% until we've actually signed the contract (which should be sometime this week!). As soon as we've done that, I will let you all know, and I'll be able to share more details!

I'm really pleased we'll be able to actually approach the summer with a concrete plan in mind soon. Thank you all for your patience as this mess has been sorted out!
